Last week, I explained the workings of short-lived airline sales and promotions. However, those aren't the only opportunities available when planning your trip.

Now, let's explore the second crucial category – 'evergreen' or 'open-ended' promotions.

Upgrade your trip for free. Evergreen 🌳 promotions from airlines.

Did you know that AirAsia lets you bring a surfboard for free, and Turkish Airlines provides a complimentary one-night 4-star hotel stay during stopovers? Or that Singapore Airlines offers a free city tour for transit passengers?

These are ‘evergreen’ or ‘open-ended’ promotions – special offers that do not have a set end date. Unlike time-limited promotions that expire after a certain period, evergreen promotions remain active indefinitely – providing a constant incentive for passengers.

More examples

• Discounts for students (usually 5-30%)

• Discounts for families or friends traveling together (also up to 30%)

• Discounts for senior travelers

• Discounts for military personnel

• Free extra checked baggage (10-30 kg)

• Discounts for specific credit card holders

• Extra travel perks for frequent flyers

• Passenger’s birthday discount (usually sent via email on the birthday date)

• 5-10% discount if the flight is booked via the airline’s mobile app

etc...

Interestingly, contrary to 'standard' promotions, airlines typically don't actively advertise their open-ended offers. This makes them less visible to the general public and more challenging to discover. Many travelers may use airline services without realizing they could enjoy more affordable fares or take advantage of various travel perks!

One way to discover these offers is by delving into the airline websites and – once the promo is found – analyzing the accompanying terms and conditions.
